At least one person is dead after a small plane crash ed near the airport in Borrego Springs in San Diego County on Thursday afternoon, the San Jose Mercury reports.
According to information on the California Airport and Pilot’s Weblog, general aviation airplanes have one of the world’s best safety records compared to all forms of public transportation. Since 1950, the accident rate per 100,000 flying hours is down 93 percent.
Tougher pilot training, stricter aircraft regulation and certification of aircraft mechanics all have contributed to the enhanced safety record of small planes. Still accidents happen with human error – pilot, mechanics or air traffic control -- accounting for the greatest number of them. Faulty equipment, lack of proper maintenance and natural causes are other reasons. In the case of this latest accident, investigators are trying to determine the cause.
